Briefly about Sterlitamak

Sterlitamak is the second populous city in the Republic of Bashkortostan in Russia, the former capital of the Bashkir ASSR. Located on the river Belaya (a tributary of the Kama) in 121 kilometers from Ufa. Is a major centre of the chemical industry and mechanical engineering. The population of 273,4 thousand people, of 36.32% Russian, 29,76% of the Bashkirs, is 24.14% Tatars, just over 2.5% Chuvash and Mari.

Based in 1766 year as Sterlitamakskiy Marina by combining Ashkadarskiy quay (on the river Ashkadar) with the nearby Tatar village. City status and the name Sterlitamak got in 1781 year. The name comes from two words: the name runs through the town of the river Sterlya, and the Turkic word "TAMAK", meaning "mouth".
